New DUN Sarawak Complex

Monday, 20 September 2004, Kuching - With the recital of a special 'doa', Sarawak Chief minister, Pehin Sri (Dr.) Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud, today began the foundation works at the new Sarawak State Legislative Assembly or Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) complex in Petra Jaya, Kuching.
The foundation works is for a 9-storey high building which will be the venue for future Sarawak's state legislative assembly sittings.
With its distinctive "payung" roof, the new DUN complex is set to become an icon for the state.
The architecture of the complex combines unique elements of Sarawak's heritage with state-of-the-art intelligent building automation systems, multimedia communication facilities, and environmentally-friendly features.
The complex is part of an overall masterplan covering a 172 acre development at Pangkalan Sapi on the banks of Sungai Sarawak, Petra Jaya, Kuching.
The new DUN Sarawak complex project is targeted for completion in 36 months.
The project is being undertaken by a joint-venture of Sarawak's leading construction companies - PPES Works (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd and Naim Cendera Sdn Bhd.
PPES Works (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd is 51% owned by Main Board listed entity, Cahya Mata Sarawk Berhad, and 49% held by state-owned SEDC Sarawak. Meanwhile, Naim Cendera Sdn Bhd is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Main Board listed entity Naim Cendera Holdings Berhad.
Present at today's start of foundation works event were members of the State Legislative Assembly including Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu and DUN Speaker, Dato Sri Awang Asfia Awang Nassar.
